Soft Autumn Navy Dress

I recently bought this dress at Loft, and I love it! Navy can be a tricky one for us soft autumns as it can be a VERY dark color…looking almost black at times. During my color analysis, I was told that I can pull off a darker navy pretty well. I shamelessly exploit this! But, I still gravitate towards those lighter, muted navies, and this dress is perfect! But how do I know it’s perfect? I compare it to other colors, of course. Let’s take a look. (I apologize in advance for the lighting in some of these photos – the sun has been all sorts of crazy around here these days, and I’m struggling to get that good, consistent sunlight. Ugh!)

First things first. If I can, I will compare the color in question to a truer form of the color. So in this instance, I compared the dress to a classic navy skirt. This showed me very quickly that the dress is a softer, muted color. Still definitely blue, but it doesn’t have the intensity and richness of the true navy. It almost looks like it has some gray in it, and I don’t see yellow undertones. I’d guess this dress leans cool but is still neutral enough to be on the soft autumn spectrum.

Is it a muted color not leaning too cool or warm? Yes!

Next, let’s compare it with some other tried and true soft autumn colors and see if it is harmonious or conversely, clashes.

Does it harmonize with olive green? Yes!

Let’s try a soft autumn yellow gold. Yes!

How about brick red? Yes!

We established that it’s a soft, muted color that blends with other soft autumn colors. We have a winner! If the color was more finicky, I’d test it with additional soft autumn colors. Let’s say I tested it against ten other colors, and it only looked good with two, that would be a strong indicator that it probably isn’t a good fit. But if it matched with maybe eight out of ten, then it’s most likely a good one. Of course, the final say would be determined by how the color actually looks on you, and I love how this navy dress looks on me…it has found a permanent place in my closet! If you’re interested in the dress, it runs large, and I sized down to size XS. Click below to shop:
