Soft Autumn Yellows

Let’s talk about the warm, inviting world of soft autumn yellows! This color is by far the most high maintenance shade in our palette. The perfect tone is often difficult to find, and it’s got to be just right. By nature, yellow is a warm color. In fact, if you want to make any color warmer, you add yellow to it. With our palette being neutral-warm, we can pull off some shades of yellow, but they need to be blended with other colors (such as brown or green) to tone down their natural warmth. You’ll probably find that even within the soft autumn yellows, only certain ones look good on you (this will be based on your skin tone and natural depth). If you can conquer yellow, you can take on ANY soft autumn color!

Here are a few shades to look for:

Butter Yellow. This creamy, soft hue is just like you’d imagine. Start with cream and add a few drops of yellow and brown. Soft Autumn’s perfect butter yellow is warm, cozy, and mellow without being loud. It pairs effortlessly with earthy browns, dusty olives, and even soft mauves, adding just the right amount of lightness to an outfit without stealing the show.

Soft Sunflower. About as “bright” as a soft autumn color can be, this cheerful hue adds an instant dose of warmth to your wardrobe. It still has the youthful, earthy vibe of a sunflower, but it’s toned down with a bit of dustiness so it feels more wearable. Instead of being bright and bold, this version leans more like antique gold or sunbaked ochre (rich, but never overpowering). It’s the kind of color that adds depth and glow to your wardrobe without shouting for attention.

Honey. Honey yellow is a cozy go-to for Soft Autumn. It’s rich and just warm enough. It has that golden glow you’d find in a jar of real honey, but softened to feel earthy and natural. It’s not too bright or sharp, which makes it super wearable and easy to pair with other Soft Autumn favorites like olive, rust, or muted plum.

Yellows to Wear

Here are some examples of good yellows for us. Notice how subdued they are. Our yellows can lean brown, gray, green, or even a tinge orange.

Yellows to Avoid

Now here are some yellows that we REALLY want to avoid. Notice how light, bright, warm, icy, etc. they are. Some of these colors would be a good fit for the Warm Autumn or Warm Spring palettes, but they’re far too warm for us.
