Soft Autumn Greens

When it comes to Soft Autumn greens, think earthy, muted, and natural. These aren’t the bright grassy or neon greens you might find in other seasons. Instead, our greens are the kinds you’d find in a quiet forest or faded botanical print. If a green looks like it could exist comfortably in nature without shouting for attention, there’s a good chance it belongs in this palette. This is one of the few colors that we can wear SEVERAL variations of, and I personally take full advantage of this! Our greens can span the range from semi-cool to semi-warm, but as usual, we still need to avoid the extremes.

Here are three specific greens that are great choices from the Soft Autumn palette:

Sage green example

Sage. Well known as a soothing color, sage green is perfect for soft autumn clothing. This soft, slightly silvery green often appears grayish next to other Soft Autumn greens and has a very desaturated look. It leans on the cooler side of the Soft Autumn palette. Think of it as a borderline color between Soft Summer and Soft Autumn. Any greens cooler or lighter than this color would fall outside the range of Soft Autumn.

Olive green example

Dusty Olive. This muted, earthy green is a staple in the Soft Autumn wardrobe. It harmonizes beautifully with just about ALL of the other colors of the season – this fact makes it a great neutral color for our palette. Olive sits between green and brown on the color spectrum, and our perfect olive leans a little more gray than the more yellow olives from the Warm Autumn season.

Moss Green example

Soft Moss. Moving to the darker side of the Soft Autumn palette, you’ll find the beautiful shade of moss. Its subtle warmth and extra depth make it one of the richer colors in our season. Moss typically exhibits a muted, earthy tone with hints of olive, brown, or gray. This color defines the darker border of our palette. Any greens darker than this would most likely be too deep to be considered a Soft Autumn shade.

Greens to Wear

Below are some examples of greens that are gorgeous on Soft Autumns! Notice how the yellow influence in these greens is not very obvious. You’ll also see that our greens have hints of brown or gray. We do best in the mid range of depth spanning from from medium-light to medium-dark.

Greens to Avoid

And here are some greens that stray too far from the neutrality that we need. Notice how dark, cool, bright, or yellow some of them are. A few of these items are considered “autumn” colors, but the extreme warmth is a deal breaker.
